Kalamkari is a Persian word that means “kalam” as “pen” and “Kari” as “craftsmanship”. This art of kalamkari is a long process of 23 steps right from dyeing, bleaching, hand painting, block-printing, starching, cleaning, and many more such steps. The method of making a kalamkari sarees is a process of 23 steps. With natural bleaching of fabric, softening it, drying it in sun, preparing dyes naturally, hand painting, air drying, and washing, this whole process needs a great amount of concentration and precision, and expertise in detailing.

The cotton fabric which is used in kalamkari is first processed with cow dung solution and bleach. When the fabric is soaked in this cow dung solution for hours it gets an off-white shade. Later this fabric is soaked in buffalo milk which helps avoid smudging of dyes that are painted with natural dyes.

This fabric is later washed in running water to get the odor of buffalo milk, which later is washed around 20 times and then dried in sun. when dried this fabric is ready for artists to paint and design, the artists create motifs and designs on this fabric which later the kalamkari artists fill colors with natural dyes.

The kalamkari artists use tamarind twigs to design and draw the beautiful sketch of Krishna Raas-Leela, god and goddess of Indian religion like Vishnu, and Parvati, designs of peacocks, lotus, and many scenes from Mahabharat and Ramayan.

Whereas in the Srikalahasti style the paintings are done from inspiration from Hindu mythology, which describes scenes from all epics and folklore. This style of art has a great connection with religion as it originated in temples.

Recently two more types of kalamkari art in India have originated, from the states, that have emerged are Gujarat and Andra Pradesh are the two prime states where these two different kalamkari patterns are done. The Andhra Pradesh kalamkari designs are mainly inspired by forts, palaces, and temples.

The motifs are of animals and birds too. Whereas the Gujarat kalamkari art shows mythological characters like Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesha, Lord Buddha, and many such.

Pattachitra Sarees

Pattachitra sarees and art are one of the most ancient and popular art from Odisha and West Bengal. The name Pattachitra is the Sanskrit word “Patta” meaning “cloth” and “Chitra” means “picture”. This art is believed to be originated in the earlier 12th century and is knowns as one of the oldest and most famous art forms which are still in practice.

The pattachitra artists are also known as chitrakars, who mainly paints based on Hindu mythologies. The most favored theme of this PattaChitra is The Badhia, which is inspired by the temple Jagannath, Krishna Leela, and the depiction of Krishna showing his power as a child, Dasabatara Patti the ten forms of Lord Krishna, and Panchmukhi the depiction of Lord Ganesha in his Five headed form.

Before the painting is made, the artists make a canvas or the said “Patta” by immersing the cloth in the mixture of cloth and gum made of tamarind seeds. This mixture is rubbed on the cloth with the help of two different types of stone and later dried.

This form of art is very disciplined and lies in set rules and regulations of doing it. A floral border is mandatory in Pattachitra paintings along with natural colors which are restricted to one single tone. This creates a unique look that cannot be replicated. The lines on the sarees are sharp, clean, and bold.

You won’t find any landscape views on these sarees. This art of Pattachitra is a mixed form of both folk and classical elements. With the constant change in the fashion industry, Pattachitra has adapted many transitions along the time and the chitrakars have started painting on palm leaves and tussar silk.

Earlier women used to create the materials and even provide the earlier background colors on the canvas and even used to give the final touch-up of coating on the paintings while the chitrakars painted the main part of the theme on them. Nowadays the painting on these sarees is done in similar pattern but is divided into many parts.

The colors on pattachitra sarees are organic and primarily bright in colors like red, indigo, yellow, white, and even black. The colors are applied through a bunch of animal hairs tied with bamboo sticks. Despite such raw tools, the outcome is really clean and beautiful.
